The Camp Lejeune Justice Act

For decades, victims of contaminated water at Camp Lejeune were time barred from seeking compensation for the injuries and damages that they suffered as a result of the contaminated water there.  On June 10, 2020, President Joe Biden signed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, and it became law immediately. This law operates to help veterans, their family members, former base employees and others who were exposed to contaminated Camp Lejeune water to file claims and lawsuits for the injuries and damages that they’ve suffered.

Take notice that the statute of limitations on this law only extends out to August 10, 2024 though, so potential claimants must exercise all due diligence.

Eligibility and Damages that Can be Sought

To be eligible to pursue damages under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, a veteran, their family members, former federal employees or contractors must have been present at the military facility for at least 30 days between August 1, 1953 and December 31, 1987. Those days need not be consecutive either. Damages that those people might seek include past and future medical bills, past and future lost earnings, any permanent disfigurement or disability, pain and suffering and any out-of-pocket expenses. Before a lawsuit is filed, a claim must be made with the federal government, so it’s critical that cases be pursued responsibly under federal law. Even family members of those who died from contaminated Camp Lejeune water can bring wrongful death actions.

Again, the statute of limitations on lawsuits brought under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act runs on August 10, 2024. Nearly all lawsuits brought after that date are likely to be barred.
