Berkeley Manor Water Contamination

Berkeley Manor is a quiet neighborhood conveniently located near Brewster Middle School and Lejeune High School mostly consisting of 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom houses with lots of storage.

Unfortunately, Bereley Manor residents unknowingly drank, bathed in and cooked with dangerous and contaminated water.

The water supply at Berkeley Manor was found to have contained the following hazardous contaminants:

  • Trichloroethylene (TCE).
  • Tetrachloroethylene or perchloroethylene (PCE)
  • Vinyl Chloride.

The ATDSR Study

The Camp Lejeune water contamination problem was remediated sometime in the middle 1980s. Then, in 2018, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry released its study that was intended to determine whether the use and consumption of Camp Lejeune’s contaminated drinking water was connected to certain cancers and other illnesses suffered by military personnel, their family members and civilian personnel who lived and worked on the base. The study concluded that indeed, a link existed between just about any type of cancer that you can think of along with other physical conditions in participants who had lived or worked at Camp Lejeune. Those conditions included female infertility and miscarriages.

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act

On August 10, 2022, President Joe Biden signed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act into law. That law means that former military personnel, their family members and civilian employees who suffered cancer and other illnesses from consuming or otherwise using contaminated water at Camp Lejeune might be eligible to file lawsuits against the federal government and potentially recover compensation for their injuries and damages. Even wrongful death lawsuits are contemplated under the act.  Eligibility to file a lawsuit under the legislation is broad. Any veteran, family member or former base employee who was exposed to Camp Lejeune water for at least 30 days between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987 might qualify. This window of opportunity is only open until August 10, 2024 though. After that date, they will be forever barred from filing.
