Scleroderma Injury Claims Under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act (CLJA) was signed into law on August 10, 2022. With the passage, victims of Camp Lejeune’s contaminated water were granted the ability to file injury claims against the U.S. Department of Defense.

To receive compensation, those suffering from scleroderma must show they served, lived, or worked at Camp Lejeune for at least 30 days at any point between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987. The 30 days of exposure do not have to have been on consecutive days.

What Is Scleroderma and How Does Camp Lejeune Toxic Water Play a Role?

Scleroderma, also known as systemic sclerosis, is the chronic hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissue. It is most often suffered by women. Scleroderma can also affect internal organs, blood vessels, and the digestive tract.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the first parts of the body to experience symptoms are usually the fingers, hands, feet, and face. Victims experience joint pain and a thickening of the skin. Patients may develop sensitivity to cold temperatures.

Patients may also suffer shortness of breath, scarring on the lungs, and irregular heartbeats. Scleroderma doesn’t have a cure, but the symptoms can be managed by medication.

Camp Lejeune Toxic Chemicals Associated with Scleroderma

At least one chemical detected in the wells at Camp Lejeune has been associated with the development of scleroderma in those exposed. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), trichloroethylene (TCE) exposure has been strongly linked to scleroderma diseases. The hazardous chemical is also suspected of causing some skin disorders.

Wells at the Hadnot water plant on Camp Lejeune were found to contain TCE levels 275 times over the safe limit. The water was likely tainted by several on-base sources through spills and leaks in underground tanks.

A California Camp Lejeune Water Contamination Lawyer would use your medical charts and CDC research to show how your scleroderma is tied to your time at Camp Lejeune.  By securing documents showing the hardships you and your family have faced, a skilled lawyer works to get the most out of your Camp Lejeune injury claim.
