Maison Law is representing victims and their families living in California who developed health issues and suffered neurobehavioral effects after drinking or coming into contact with toxic water at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

Contact us today if you or a loved one were diagnosed with neurobehavioral disorders after exposure to Camp Lejeune’s contaminated water in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, or 80s.

Legal Relief for Camp Lejeune Toxic Water Victims

Patients suffering harm after their exposure to polluted well water at Camp Lejeune received positive news when The Camp Lejeune Justice Act (CLJA) was passed on August 10, 2022.

The act removed legal obstacles for victims and their families hoping to seek compensation after suffering from major health issues. Victims who developed cancers, neurobehavioral effects, and other medical issues after coming in contact with Camp Lejeune’s water can finally demand financial support from the U.S. Department of Defense.

To be eligible to file a claim, victims must show they served, lived, or worked at Camp Lejeune for at least 30 days at any point between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987. The 30 days of exposure do not have to have been on consecutive days.

The families of victims who didn’t live long enough to seek justice for the harm they were subjected to can also file claims.

Neurobehavioral Effects Caused by Camp Lejeune Toxic Water Exposure

Those who drank or came in contact with contaminated water at Camp Lejeune may have been left with debilitating neurobehavioral effects. These adverse effects involve the function of the central nervous system (including brain and spinal cord function). Victims exposed to harmful chemicals may have experienced a cognitive decline, motor/sensory difficulties, or a neuropsychiatric disorder.

The National Library of Medicine details the common neurobehavioral effects:

Cognitive Symptoms:

  • Poor memory.
  • Dementia.
  • Learning impairments.

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms:

  • Trouble concentrating.
  • Changes in mood.
  • Depression.
  • PTSD
  • Thoughts of suicide.
  • Insomnia.

Motor Problems:

  • Muscle weakness.
  • Tremors.
  • Involuntary movements.
  • Changes in walking gait.

In a cruel twist, other illnesses linked to exposure to the toxins in Camp Lejeune Water could cause neurobehavioral effects. The harsh treatments that cancer patients must go through can cause them. Parkinson’s Disease sufferers will also experience neurobehavioral symptoms. These behavioral issues may have forced victims to retire from their careers or from military service.

Neurobehavioral effects and neurobehavioral performance deficits have been linked to exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE), and tetrachloroethylene (PCE). The CDC documents that the two chemicals were the major contaminants detected in water treatment plants on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

Who Can File a Claim Over Camp Lejeune Water Contamination Health Problems?

Victims who meet the criteria of the Camp Lejeune Justice Act and have medical documentation of neurobehavioral disorders can file a claim against the U.S. Department of Defense and seek damages.

Marine veterans and their families who lived and served on Camp Lejeune are eligible to file. Other military personnel who meet the 30-day requirement of time spent on Camp Lejeune could file.

Civilian employees who worked on Camp Lejeune are eligible. Families may file a CLJA claim on behalf of a deceased loved one who suffered from neurobehavioral problems.

There are others living in California who may be eligible under the CLJA to receive benefits. It’s a good idea to schedule a free consultation with a skilled California Camp Lejeune Justice Act Lawyer to find out if you qualify and to get an idea of what your case may be worth.

Predicting the level of compensation your case will earn may be impossible. Every case will be different. But there are certain factors that play into the size of the Camp Lejeune toxic water settlement check you and your family may receive:

  • Totals on the medical cost you have paid and estimates on the care you may need in the years ahead.
  • Lifelong estimates on expenses associated with a permanent physical disability stemming from neurobehavioral effects.
  • Support for the physical pain and discomfort Camp Lejeune victims have been subjected to through their disorder.
  • Support for the emotional trauma suffered by victims and their families.
  • Loss of enjoyment of life. Being unable to participate in hobbies and family activities.
  • Loss of consortium. The loss of an intimate relationship with a spouse.
  • Past and future lost wages and benefits as a victim misses work and in some cases may never be able to return.
  • Wrongful death benefits. The families of Camp Lejeune contaminated water victims are encouraged to file a wrongful death claim to secure support for all past medical costs. Support for the costs of a funeral and proper burial no matter how long ago a loved one passed away. Support for the family in the years to come as they must face a future without the guidance and financial support of the deceased.
