Support for Camp Lejeune Victims with Liver Cancer

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act (CLJA) was signed into law on August 10, 2022. The act grants victims of Camp Lejeune’s contaminated water a two-year window to file injury claims against the Department of Defense.

To receive compensation, liver cancer victims must show they served, lived, or worked at Camp Lejeune for at least 30 days at any point between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987. The 30 days of exposure do not have to have been continuous.

Liver cancer patients must also have medical documentation of their diagnosis and invoices showing treatment costs. Estimates on the costs of their care that might be needed in the years ahead would also help determine the size of the Camp Lejeune toxic water settlement check.

Veterans of the Marines and other branches of the U.S. Military would also need to provide service records. Paystubs that show a loss of income while victims could not go to work during treatment for cancer would also be important.

The families of victims who have tragically died from the effects of their time at Camp Lejeune should also collect the documents needed and seek financial support through the CLJA.

Support for Camp Lejeune Toxic Water Liver Cancer Victims

Liver cancer is cancer that originates in the cells of your liver. It manifests as a growth of abnormal cells. The Mayo Clinic details that cancer more commonly enters the liver from other organs like the colon, lungs, or breasts. This form of cancer that spreads to the liver would be known as metastatic cancer.

The most often diagnosed cancer that begins in the liver is hepatocellular carcinoma, which forms in the main type of liver cell (hepatocyte).

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) states that there is sufficient evidence to link vinyl chloride exposure to liver cancer cases in Camp Lejeune victims. Trichloroethylene (TCE) is another dangerous substance known to be in Camp Lejeune water for over three decades. It’s also been associated with the development of liver cancer.

Liver Cirrhosis is another condition thought to be a risk for those exposed to Camp Lejeune chemically tainted water. Cirrhosis is a scarring of the liver, and it increases the risk of liver cancer.

Liver cancer patients may be subjected to chemotherapy. Heating (radiofrequency ablation) or freezing (cryoablation) the tumors to destroy cancer cells is another option. Surgery to remove a tumor or to perform a liver transplant is also a method of treatment.

Who Is Eligible to File a Camp Lejeune Liver Cancer Injury Claim?

It’s estimated that over a million people may have been exposed to toxic chemicals during the Camp Lejeune water crisis in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. Under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, those victims and their families can now file lawsuits against the federal government to secure long-awaited financial help with their medical issues.

Those eligible to apply for compensation include these and other parties:

  • Military veterans from all branches who served at Camp Lejeune and their families who lived on base.
  • Civilian employees and contractors who worked on the base.
  • Individuals born to mothers who were exposed to Camp Lejeune’s water supplies.
  • Guardians for Camp Lejeune victims who are incapacitated and can’t file a claim for themselves.
  • Family members who have lost loved ones to health issues caused by exposure to toxic water on the Marine Corps Base.

Compensation Available for Camp Lejeune Toxic Water Liver Cancer Sufferers

Camp Lejeune water crisis victims and their families don’t need to sit and wonder if they qualify for federal compensation for their hardships. Your Camp Lejeune liver cancer attorney would be seeking the maximum in compensation to get the most out of any settlement with the U.S. Department of Defense.

The following factors and others will be key when the amount of a Camp Lejeune contaminated water settlement is determined:

  • Past, current, and future medical bills.
  • Support for the pain a victim endures during treatment for liver cancers, including during surgery recovery and chemotherapy.
  • Support for the emotional trauma cancer patients and their families endure. The anxiety and depression that follows a difficult cancer treatment schedule.
  • Support for a loss of consortium (loss of intimacy with a partner).
  • Support for a loss of enjoyment of life.
  • Loss of earnings while a patient is unable to work while in recovery from liver cancer. Lifetime support when cancer caused by Camp Lejeune water exposure forces victims to give up their careers or military service.
  • Wrongful death benefits. Families of Camp Lejeune water victims should demand reimbursement for funeral costs and the enormous medical bills patients likely built up before they passed on. Close relatives would also count on a Camp Lejeune contaminated water wrongful death claim to secure additional assistance replacing the income the deceased could no longer provide the family.
