Camp Lejeune Dangerous Water Issues

Somewhere around a million military personnel, their families and civilian workers were exposed to hazardous chemicals in the water supply on Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base. This exposure was possible over a span of more than three decades. Dangerous solvents and degreasers used at a nearby dry-cleaning facility and on base were detected in two water treatment plants serving Camp Lejeune.

Marines and other military personnel and their families drank this water, inhaled the chemicals in it, and also bathed and showered in it. Anyone who came in contact with tainted water could have developed many health issues associated with the contaminants. Health hazards linked to these chemicals include many forms of cancers and other serious ailments like fatty liver disease.

Camp Lejeune Victims with Hepatic Steatosis Eligible for Compensation

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act (CLJA) was finally approved by congress and signed by the president in August of 2022. The new law clears the way for victims of Camp Lejeune water contamination to seek compensation for the hardships they’ve faced due to exposure.

Victims and their families now have up to two years from the date the CLJA was enacted to bring a claim against the federal government and secure overdue financial support.

In order to proceed with a CLJA lawsuit, victims of fatty liver disease and other illnesses must prove they were in contact with the water at Camp Lejeune for at least 30 days between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987. The 30 days of exposure do not have to have been continuous.

These and other parties are permitted to move forward with a Camp Lejeune toxic water hepatic steatosis lawsuit:

  • Marine veterans and military veterans from all branches who served and trained at Camp Lejeune.
  • Military family members who lived on base.
  • Civilian employees and contractors who worked on the base.
  • Individuals conceived after their mothers were exposed to Camp Lejeune’s water supplies.
  • Guardians for Camp Lejeune victims who are incapacitated and can’t file a claim for themselves.
  • Family members may file a wrongful death claim on behalf of victims who died due to health issues caused by exposure to toxic water on the Marine Corps Base.

Support for Camp Lejeune Fatty Liver Disease Victims

Hepatic steatosis or fatty liver disease means patients have too much fat stored in liver cells. It can be caused by drinking too much alcohol, but this form of fatty liver disease is preventable and usually improves when alcohol consumption is reduced.

The Mayo Clinic explains that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) describes several liver conditions seen in people who drink little or no alcohol. The condition can result in a more aggressive form of fatty liver disease called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). NASH causes liver inflammation, liver scarring (cirrhosis), and liver failure.

Vinyl Chloride is just one of the harmful chemicals detected in Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base water supplies. The CDC reports that there is at least one study linking Vinyl Chloride exposure to cases of liver cirrhosis. There is stronger evidence that contact with vinyl chloride brings an increased risk of liver cancer.  Trichloroethylene (TCE) is another dangerous substance known to be in Camp Lejeune water over a period of three decades. It’s also been associated with the development of Liver Cancer.

A California Camp Lejeune Water Contamination Lawyer would use this data and other studies to show the clear link between toxic water and a client’s development of liver issues. By securing documents showing the hardships victims and their families have faced during liver disease treatment, a skilled lawyer works to get the most out of a Camp Lejeune hepatic steatosis injury claim.

Do I Need a Lawyer to Sue Over Camp Lejeune Water Contamination?

You don’t have to have a lawyer to file a CLJA claim against the Department of Defense. However, if you don’t receive a fair settlement offer and you decide to sue the government to earn more, you should know that these lawsuits are very complex.

The government has different requirements and deadlines for you to meet with each step of a Camp Lejeune water contamination injury claim. Miss one of these deadlines and you could risk letting the federal government off the hook for what you’ve been through. You could forfeit your Camp Lejeune toxic water settlement.

Victims are only able to file a CLJA lawsuit in the Federal Court in the Eastern District of North Carolina. This may be difficult for victims living in California. An experienced California personal Injury Lawyer would handle this and other frustrating steps in the claim process for you.

Your Camp Lejeune Water Contamination Litigation Claim Lawyer goes back decades to retrieve medical documents, service records, pay stubs, and other powerful evidence to present to federal investigators. Your lawyer makes sure you file a strong case that’s on time. Your lawyer fights to get the most out of your CLJA case.

A skilled personal injury lawyer goes over every detail for you to make sure every damage you and your family have suffered is included in a lawsuit. You’ll be asking for reimbursement for every medical cost you faced over the years and for the bills you may get in the future.  The wages and work benefits you’ve lost and will lose while you can’t fulfill the requirements of your job should also be reimbursed.

Families who have had a loved one taken away by a liver condition will need to request money for all medical costs over the years and for funeral expenses. A wrongful death lawyer also ensures that families receive support to protect themselves in the future when they’ll be without the care and financial support the deceased can no longer provide.
